Receipt Paper Sizes Explained: Width, Roll Diameter, and Core Size
Quick answer: Find the paper requirements for your exact printer model before ordering a replacement roll. Match the paper type, width and tolerance, maximum roll outside diameter, and any core requirements. An “80mm” or “58mm” label alone does not confirm that a roll will fit your printer.
If you no longer have the packaging, measuring a roll can help identify what you have. The printer’s documentation tells you what it accepts. Use both to build a complete specification before buying a box of replacements.
1. Start with Your Printer’s Paper Requirements
Find the full model number on the printer’s label, then open the manufacturer’s user manual or technical guide for that model. Look for sections such as “Paper Specifications,” “Media” or “Roll Paper.”
Record these details together:
- Paper type: Copy the specified material, such as thermal roll paper.
- Paper width and tolerance: Include the allowed variation, not just the size category.
- Maximum roll outside diameter: The roll’s outside diameter must not exceed this limit.
- Core dimensions: Record inside and outside diameters separately if specified.
- Other requirements: Check paper thickness, approved media, loading direction, and any paper guides or settings.
Also establish which paper-width configuration your printer currently uses. Do not assume that a model advertising two widths is ready to accept either roll without changes.
If you cannot find the requirements, ask the printer manufacturer or supplier using the full model number. A photo of the existing roll or a previous order number can help the supplier identify the product, but neither confirms the printer’s full paper requirements.
2. Understand Paper Width, Roll Diameter, and Core Size
These measurements describe different parts of the roll. Keep their names and units beside the numbers when comparing products.

| Dimension | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Paper width | The distance from one edge of the paper strip to the other, across the receipt. |
| Roll outside diameter | The distance across the circular end of the whole roll, through its center. |
| Core inside diameter | The distance across the open hole in the center of the tube. |
| Core outside diameter | The distance across the outside edges of the tube itself, including its walls. |
Roll length is a separate measurement. It tells you how much paper is wound onto the roll. Length does not replace an outside-diameter specification: the same length can make a different-sized roll when paper thickness or core size changes.
Read the Labels, Not Just the Numbers
A listing might give width and outside diameter in millimeters; another might give width in inches and length in feet. Read the dimension names and units before interpreting a description such as “80 × 80.” If they are missing, ask the seller what each number means.
Likewise, “core size” is incomplete if the listing does not identify the inside or outside diameter. Do not assume an unlabeled third number means the hole size.
Treat 58mm and 80mm as starting categories, then check the actual permitted width. An inch-based listing also needs to be compared against the model’s specification, rather than matched by a familiar product label.
3. How to Measure a Receipt Paper Roll
Use a ruler with millimeter markings for an initial check. Calipers can help distinguish the core’s inner and outer edges. Record the tool and units you used; an approximate measurement should not be presented as proof that a roll meets a tight tolerance.
- Measure paper width. Unroll a short, undamaged section and lay it flat. Measure straight across from edge to edge, perpendicular to the direction the paper feeds. Do not measure only the printed text area.
- Measure roll outside diameter. Look at the circular end and measure from one outside edge to the opposite edge through the center. This is a straight line across the roll, not the distance around it. Avoid squeezing the paper or including a loose tail.
- Measure core inside diameter. Measure across the open hole, from one inner edge of the tube to the other. An empty core from the same roll type can make the edges easier to see.
- Measure core outside diameter, if accessible. Measure across the tube’s outer edges, keeping this separate from the hole measurement. If the paper obscures the tube, use an empty core from the same roll type or request the supplier’s specification. Do not unwrap a usable roll just to expose the core.
A partially used roll cannot tell you the printer’s maximum new-roll diameter. Its outside diameter has already decreased. Even an unused roll only tells you that roll’s size, so obtain the printer’s maximum from its documentation.
If an edge is crushed, the tube is distorted, or you cannot read a measurement clearly, mark it “not confirmed” and ask for the roll supplier’s specification.
4. How to Read an Official Paper Specification
Consider the Epson TM-T20III in its 80mm paper configuration. These values come from pages 81–82 of Epson’s Rev. F Technical Reference Guide. These are specifications for that model and configuration, not a universal receipt-paper standard. Read Epson’s official guide.
| Item | Value in the guide |
|---|---|
| Paper type | Specified thermal roll paper |
| Actual paper width | 79.5 ± 0.5 mm |
| Maximum roll outside diameter | 83 mm |
| Core inside diameter | 12 mm |
| Core outside diameter | 18 mm |
| Paper thickness | 53–75 µm (micrometers) |
| Maximum printable width | 72.0 ± 0.2 mm |
- Paper width: “80mm” names the category; 79.5 ± 0.5 mm is the actual width requirement.
- Roll outside diameter: 83 mm is a maximum, not a required diameter.
- Printable width: 72.0 ± 0.2 mm describes the printing area, not the paper width.
Changing this model to 58mm requires a guide and software changes. Epson states that you cannot return to 80mm after changing to 58mm and using the printer. See page 41.
Check your own model’s documentation before choosing paper. These figures do not establish compatibility for NUCOUN or other printers.
5. Before You Order: A Paper Roll Checklist
Copy or print this checklist. Start by identifying the printer and the exact roll you plan to order:
- Printer brand and full model: ____________________
- Current paper-width configuration, including required guides or settings: ____________________
- Official document, revision and page or link: ____________________
- Proposed roll product code and listing link: ____________________
Enter the printer’s requirements and the seller’s values side by side. In the last column, also mark each applicable item Matches, Does not match or Not confirmed. Do not treat an estimated measurement as a confirmed printer requirement.
| Check | Printer requirement | Proposed roll / status |
|---|---|---|
| Paper type | ________ | ________ |
| Paper width and tolerance | ________ | ________ |
| Roll outside diameter | Maximum: ________ | ________ |
| Core inside / outside diameter, if specified | ________ | ________ |
| Paper thickness / other media requirements | ________ | ________ |
Questions still awaiting confirmation: ____________________
Matching the width alone leaves the diameter, core and paper type unresolved. If the seller provides only a length, request the outside diameter as well. Resolve any mismatch or unconfirmed applicable requirement before ordering.
You can send this short message with the proposed paper listing:
We use [printer brand and full model] in [paper-width configuration]. The manual specifies [paper type], [width and tolerance], [maximum roll outside diameter] and [core requirements]. Does this exact paper roll meet those requirements? Please confirm any missing dimensions and other relevant paper specifications.
For a NUCOUN printer, start with the model resources in the NUCOUN Support Center. If a required paper specification is missing, contact NUCOUN with the model, document reference and proposed roll listing so the question can be checked against your equipment.
